Read MoreGetting a hotel room in Johannesburg during the World Cup was impossible, so we flew from San Francisco to London where we spent the better part of 2 days. This worked out well for David because the impressionist art auctions were in progress. From London we took British Airways to Johannesburg. Somehow, we got upgraded to Business Class.
The above photo doesn't really do justice to the convoluted seating which accommodates 8 flat bed seats in each row. We were in the center aisle in 2 seats facing backwards. If our seatmates had their beds extended, we basically had to pole-vault out over their feet in order to get up. However, the upgrades were much appreciated for the 9-hr flight to South Africa because we were going to hit the ground running. We arrived in Johannesburg in the early morning, then connected a few hours later to a flight headed for Maun, Botswana.......
