Meanwhile, oblivious to the unfolding tragedy behind us, Sami, David and I got out our cameras and started shooting away. As you probably know from seeing March Of The Penguins, male emperors huddle together in a giant mass during winter to protect the precious eggs which are kept warm atop their feet in brood pouches. After the chicks hatch and the weather begins to warm, the colony separates into smaller groups which move frequently to get to clean snow. The Snow Hill colony is medium-sized, containing approxiamtely 4000 pairs of breeding penguins. The adults had divided themselves into at least 6 widely dispersed splinter groups. We were permitted to visit 3 of them.
