Unlike the emperors, king penguins breed all year long. The king breeding cycle is divided into thirds: (1) courting and brooding eggs; (2) hatching and protecting the newborns which sit on their parents feet; and (3) fledging when the chicks can be left alone. Only 2 of these cycles can be observed at any given point in time. We were there for 1 and 3.
