Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas has been fighting to protect orangutans and their rainforest habitat for over 46 years. She's a truly remarkable person and the world's foremost authority on the orangutan.
In 1969 while studying at the University of California, Dr. Galdikas met the famed anthropologist, Dr. Louis Leakey. It took her 3 years to persuade him to find funding for her, as he'd done for Diann Fosse (mountain gorillas) and Jane Goodall (chimpanzees), but he came through. Leakey called his three disciples the "Trimates".
At the age of 25, Dr. Galdikas and her first husband moved to Borneo, at the time one of the wildest and most inhospitable places on earth. She spent months alone in the forest studying orangutans, fighting poachers and leeches, and slowly delivering on her vision.
I encourage you to "google" Dr. Galdikas. Her story is amazing, uplifting, and inspirational. After just one week with her, she has changed me. Please read the caption on the very last photo in this gallery. It says it all.
