Whales, etc
Read MoreThe rest of this gallery contains photos of spectacular wildlife taken in less than spectacular weather. Hopefully this graphic will give you some idea of just how big a blue whale is. It's humbling. These are the ultimate gentle giants, roaming the oceans in search of their tiny prey....krill. A big blue whale can be 100 feet long and weigh up to 150 tons. Its heart is as large as a small car. Fifty people could stand on its tongue. In its first several weeks of life, a blue whale gains 10 pounds an hour or a little over 200 pounds a day. During high feeding season, a blue whale consumes 4-6 tons of krill every day.
Even with all the statistics, it's nearly impossible to imagine the enormity of these animals until you actually see one.
