Fall 2014. Sheri and I took off for South Lake Tahoe where we planned to meet up with Penny. Penny had given us a great tip about burrowing owls near Sacramento, which was on our route. Penny had also given us driving instructions that even Sheri and I (both directionally challenged) couldn't fail to follow. Just a short 5-minute detour from the freeway we found many owl nests very near the access road. Morning light isn't great at this spot, but it was so wonderful to see all these owls!
