2021 Burrowing Owls

These small burrowing owls are in serious trouble. Their population is rapidly declining. Everything is to blame. We're lucky to have small pockets of them in the greater Bay Area. These photos were taken on May 22, 2021. The chicks hadn't yet emerged from their burrows. These owls, not surprisingly, build their nests underground. Many owl pairs will share a large nesting site, but they're quite protective of their individual burrows.

This is the male. His job for the next month or so is to hunt.
