2018 Golden Gate Park - Great Blue Herons
Read More1 / 36
Sheri introduced me to the great blue heron rookery in Golden Gate Park many years ago. It's a true spectacle. Sadly, human things have changed over the years. The result is it's no longer safe to go to our old haunts alone. Armed with pepper spray and watchful eyes, we ventured into the park several times during the spring.
It was a great year for the herons. There were at least 6 active nests on an island in Stow Lake. A late spring storm wreaked havoc on those nests, destroying one of them. The herons were undaunted.... here, the couple that lost their nest (and likely their eggs) is rebuilding. (The last entry in this gallery is a video showing the nest building and ending with the chicks.)
