Great Horned Owl/Red-Shouldered Hawk/Woodpecker Nesting 2011
Read More1 / 48
March 29: For at least 4 years, and probably longer, this nest has been occupied by a beautiful pair of red-shouldered hawks. Joan, Penny and I have watched them successfully raise families since 2007. Amazingly, the nest is located in a eucalyptus grove adjacent to an office parking lot. One recent morning Joan went to see if the hawks had arrived, but here's what she found instead.... a great horned owl had appropriated the nest for her new family! Great horned owls are famous for this behavior, and except for eagles, they're the apex predators of the sky around here, so the hawks had no choice but to leave.
