Osprey facts: Ospreys are large raptors found on every continent except Antarctica; 99% of their diet is fish, so they spend most of their lives near water; females are larger and darker than males; average wingspan is over 5 ft; average lifespan in the wild is somewhere between 7-10 yrs, but some individuals live into their 20's.; ospreys mate for life and re-use the same nest year after year.
Ospreys are fierecly territorial, but their concept of territory only extends a short distance around and above their nests. As a result, osprey nests are fairly close together. This year at least 8 of them are occupied along the Richmond shoreline.
