In order to get ahead of the crowds, we made the truly unique Vasa Museum our first stop. Perhaps you can tell from the design of the building that this is a maritime museum. Here's the story: The great gunship Vasa, carrying 64 cannons on two decks, was built to be the mightiest in Europe. On August 10, 1628 the ship was ready for its maiden voyage to wage war on Poland. The entire town turned out to bid farewell to the ship and its crew. Unfortunately, after sailing for maybe 2 minutes and still within the harbor, the ship sank in 100 feet of water after the wind blew it onto its side, flooding the gun ports. The ship didn't see the light of day until 1956, when it was retrieved from the sea.
